|Virginia artist and author Mary Montague Sikes shows landmark Wilmington, Delaware hostelry, Hotel du Pont, in pastels, photographs and descriptive text. Sikes details the design conception, construction and numerous renovations which create the classic accommodation to attract guests ranging from honeymooners to world leaders. Learn about the art collection, discover the du Pont story at the Hagley Museum, and see the Playhouse Theatre, a ‘pre-Broadway’ show place located in the Hotel du Pont building. The Hotel du Pont is a selection from the Snapshot in Time series, an updated re-purposing of the installments in Sikes' classic "HOTELS TO REMEMBER".
Hotels to Remember is as memorable as a visit to the places it chronicles. The text and photographs are excellent, but the paintings by the author are my favorite, each capturing spirit and sense of place in a way no ordinary guidebook ever could. The new single hotel versions are perfect for that special visit. Had I time and money enough, I would revisit each hotel with Mary Montague Sikes’ narrative and art tucked into my travel bag.
